More than 2.5 million native 'Indians' served in WWII... they were instrumental in stopping the encroachment into central Asia of the Japanese in the Pacific Theater. The Indian Army also proved a valuable asset in the Western Desert Campaign. The Provinces of India (which included most of modern-day India and parts of Pakistan and Bangladesh), being imperial colonies of Great Britain until their independence after WWII in 1948, were by default a part of the Allies of World War II. Several Indian princely states, within the British Raj, provided large donations to the Allies through their massive ability to produce armaments! Many Indian troops were relegated to service/maintenance positions and enlisted additionally in messenger duties and with their motorcycle troops. The Indian Army Infantry troops were instrumental in defensive and holdings tactics in several major battle in NA.
