Indy’s Game Reserve: The AANA Database of Wargames of the MTO

Description: Indy's Research Into Strategic, Operational & Tactical Games Developed Around the Campaigns in North Africa and the Mediterranean

Welcome to Indy’s Game Reserve: The AANA Database of Wargames of the MTO.  Here we have developed a database of games revolving around the various aspects of the war in our group’s specific area of study.  We have attempted to gather information on every type of war game (Boardgame, Card Game, Computer, Miniature and Role-Playing Game) ever published as well as those currently under development or on “Pledge Lists,” dealing with the campaigns and battles that took place in all countries in the MTO during World War II.  This includes battles fought in North Africa, the Middle East, East Africa, Northwest Africa and Tunisia, Malta, Sicily and Italy, Southern France, Yugoslavia, Albania, Greece and Crete, the naval and air battles at sea, and several “What If?” scenario games thrown in as well.  This is still truly a work in progress, so if you have knowledge of any other titles not listed here please feel free to post a message in our forum and we will include them here in our database.

The games listed in this database vary greatly in level and complexity, from the relatively simple to learn and easy to play card games up to what has been called by many the most detailed board game ever designed and published, Richard Berg’s “Campaign for North Africa” published by SPI in 1978.

We have attempted to present the following types of information for each game title:

  • Title: Title and Subtitle

  • Publisher: The game (or magazine) publisher.

  • Magazine: If applicable, the magazine and issue number the game may have appeared in.

  • Designer(s): The designer(s) of the edition of the game presented

  • Year: The year each edition the game was published.

  • Type: The type of game format, i.e. Boardgame, Card Game, Computer Game, Miniatures, Role-Playing Game.

  • Level: Strategic/Operational/Tactical and the size of units that appear in the game.

  • Scale: The actual distance and time represented in the simulation

  • Counters: The total number of counters/markers (or cards) that are included in the game.

  • Map(s): The number and physical dimensions of the map sheets/boards.

  • Scenarios/Turns: The number of scenarios/turns, and corresponding actual time/dates represented.

  • Playing Time: The total time in hours required for play

  • Comments:  Notes on the historical period represented by the simulation, type of game system, etc.

  • References: A listing of all sources used to obtain the above information.  The publishers’ websites, if available, are listed first, the remaining sources are listed alphabetically.

We have gathered this information from many different sources on the web, and we have provided the references where this information was originally found. Several publishers have been nice enough to link with us and have also provided additional product information about their games including sample images and screen shots, for them we have included their information below.  For some of the titles listed in our database very little information seems to exist on the web other than the title and publisher, so for some of these titles you will see missing data.  We would also like to present more detailed information in the “Comments” regarding featured rules, features and types of units represented in the games, for example if air power is represented, reserve movement, Headquarters units and leaders, etc. Again, if anyone out there has any additional information that could help fill in any of these gaps or add to what we already have please feel free to post a message in our forum.

In presenting the information in this database we have tried to be as fair and accurate as possible.  While this database does provide a great amount of information in many cases more detailed information, including box cover art, counter scans, maps, etc., and in some cases complete games may be found on other websites. On the other hand for some of these titles very little information was found, in either circumstance we have listed the references we used, which you may use to try and obtain additional information not covered here in our database.

We hope that you will find this database both useful and enjoyable!   “INDY”
